12 DEC 2023 Deputy Principal: Students

The Student Senate began in 2023 at the start of Semester 2 with the purpose of providing student voice towards events at Kolbe. It was made up of a representative from each PC group in years 7 – 11 and meet most weeks on a Friday. Students initially were quizzed on their leadership capabilities, providing insight on who they looked up and who they thought were inspirational leaders, naturally Maximillian Kolbe and Mr Scully featured heavily in the responses. They then developed their own leadership thoughts as they began their work on representing the student body.

Students were allocated to a portfolio to work with, and these included Harmony Day (to be celebrated in 2024), Mental Health Week/R U Ok Day, My Mahi Shop and Kolbe Feast Day. Within these portfolios, no matter how big or small, the students learnt the value of teamwork, sharing ideas, cooperation and decision making all while contributing to the life of the College.

Later in the year students celebrated their work with a pizza lunch and participated in a public speaking workshop. Public speaking was identified as one of the main characteristics an effective leader needed to have and the students thoroughly enjoyed developing their skills in this area.

I congratulate all students who were involved in the Student Senate this year and urge them to reapply in 2024 as we continue to improve and increase the student agency across the College.
