We are thrilled to celebrate one of our own, past student Charbel Shamoon, who has recently received a prestigious call-up to represent the Iraq national team ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers. Charbel’s journey began right here at Kolbe Catholic College, where he commenced his academic career in 2016 and graduated in 2021. His time at Kolbe holds a special place in his heart, as he fondly recalls, “I absolutely loved every year of it.” It was during those formative years that Charbel’s passion for soccer ignited.

Growing up in a soccer-loving family, he was destined to pursue the sport. “I can remember this ever since I was around the age of 5,” Charbel reminisced, often spending his free time at the park with cousins and siblings, honing the skills that would serve as the cornerstone of his aspirations to become a professional soccer player.

Charbel’s family has been a tremendous source of inspiration throughout his journey, with his father and brother playing pivotal roles in nourishing his love for the game. “If I wasn’t playing soccer with my dad or brother, we were watching it every weekend. It’s a thing we still do to this day,” he explained, highlighting the supportive foundation that propelled him forward.

Receiving his first call-up to represent Iraq is not just a personal triumph for Charbel; it is a moment of immense pride for all of us who have watched him grow. “To wear the jersey and make my family proud is an absolute honour,” he expressed. His selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers was a moment he describes as surreal, reflecting the dedication and hard work he has put into his career. “I was over the moon, but I was also focused and ready to do my job,” he said. Having previously represented Iraq at the Under-20 level, moving to the senior national team is a dream realised. Charbel aims not only for personal accomplishments but also to contribute to a greater goal: qualifying Iraq for the World Cup after a long 40-year absence. “The fans deserve this. They are the most passionate fans I have ever seen, and it would be an honour to help qualify Iraq for the World Cup,” he said.

As he looks to the future, Charbel envisions himself as a starter at his club, with hopes of winning prestigious titles and potentially moving to a European club to further enhance his skills. “There is no greater honour than playing for your national team,” he stated, embodying the pride and ambition that inspires us all. Charbel’s remarkable journey has already seen him achieve milestones, from making his club debut on his 20th birthday to earning his first international cap at just 21. “Making my international debut was surreal; I had goosebumps realising how far I had come,” he shared, reminding us of the resilience required to pursue such a demanding sport.

As Charbel prepares to don the national jersey, we are excited to witness the bright future that lies ahead for both him and Iraqi soccer. We couldn’t be prouder of him!
